“Spiritual” Loose Change

On my recent trip to Louisiana, my father-in-law and I pulled into Starbucks to get pick up some coffee in a language that neither of us speak in a size that neither of us can pronunciate. It was a beautiful day and in front of us was the car pictured above. A white convertible BMW with the top down. Inside the car was a man who had a FAT rolex, nice shades, slicked back hair, etc. The only thing missing from this perfect picture was a supermodel sitting in the passenger seat.

As we waited on him to get his coffee, my father-in-law both commented on how he looked like he was out to sell stock or play polo or go on some luxurious vacation and then he did something that caught us both by surprise. He paid for a $3.00 coffee all in change. Not quarters, but nickels and dimes and pennies.

At that moment, God spoke to my heart and asked me why I go to church somedays and look like the guy in the car? I dress up, put on a smile, shake everyone’s hand, teach Sunday School (look like I have all the “money” in the world …spiritually) but some Sundays, when it comes to worship, I have to pay God in change because I had not spent much time with Him that week. Do you ever feel this way?

Jesus, forgive me when I have to scrape the ashtray of my car for change to worship You. You truly deserve so much more than I give to you as praise!

  • Amen!!! Way to call me out, Daniel… I’m happy I have your blog, as well as other daily reminders from other friends that I must give ALL of the glory to Him, and praise him and worship him in everything I do.
